Magnetrol – Website Design

I led the way for the full redesign of the Magnetrol International website. I designed the site and the information architecture, as well as managed the outsourced production company who built it. I also did product photography for many of the individual product images on the site.

The Challenge:

The old site was a traditional top-down hierarchy architecture, which in some cases took the user up to 9 clicks to reach a single product. There was also no way to compare similar applicable products, and it was difficult for a user to determine the best product to fit their needs. The overall user experience was far from ideal.

The Process and Solution:

Since Magnetrol products can be used in a variety of industries and applications, users needed an easy way to narrow down which products fit their own unique circumstances.

One of the key new features I proposed and implemented for the updated site was a product search filtering function similar to that used on Amazon and other popular online shopping sites. The filtering function allows the user to quickly zero in on the best products that matched their industry and needs. I also added sections for thought leadership campaign links, Similar Products, Recently Viewed Products, and the site also suggests products within the engineering schematics that show the individual steps for various processes by industry.

The Outcome

In addition to an up-to-date website with a greatly improved architecture, aesthetic and user experience, it also won three awards:

  • Platinum MarCom Award – Website Business to Business
  • Summit Creative Award – B-to-B Product Website
  • Interactive Media Award – B2B Website
